The history of Silvassa can be traced back to the 17th century. Back then, it was ruled by the Kohli tribe and was later on invaded by the Rajputs.

By the 18th century, it was under the command of Marathas and Peshwas. However, there were constant power struggles with Britishers and the Portuguese to gain control of Silvassa. In the 18th century, the Marathas even formed an alliance with the Portuguese to get rid of the British forces.

It was in 1885 that Silvassa was made the head town of the Portuguese and was named Paço d'Arcos. In 1961, after Indian independence, Silvassa was merged with the Indian Republic. Then in 1974, a treaty was signed between Portugal and India, after which Dadra and Nagar Haveli became an Indian Union Territory.
