History of Aguada Fort

Aguada Fort was built in 1612 with the primary purpose of safeguarding the region against enemy invasions and offering protection to the citizens. It also served as a crucial water replenishment point for ships traveling from Europe. The name Aguada, meaning "water," reflects the presence of a freshwater spring within the fort, which provided much-needed drinking water to passing ships. This is also why crews often stopped by the fort to refill their freshwater stores.

The fort houses one of Asia’s oldest lighthouses, erected in 1864, making it a significant historical site. This lighthouse guided ships safely through the waters, and today, it remains one of the fort’s most fascinating attractions.
