Hotel Peterhoff housed at least seven Viceroys and Governors General throughout the Raj. After India's independence from the British Empire, Peterhof Hotel Shimla then served as the Punjab High Court. It’s the same place that the trial of Nathuram Godse (who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi) took place in 1948–49. Thereafter, when Himachal became a full-fledged state, the Peterhof Shimla became the Raj Bhavan for Himachal Pradesh until it was entirely destroyed by fire on 12 January 1981. The building was rebuilt and reopened in 1991 as a luxury heritage hotel with 34 suites. This property is maintained by HPTDC and is located in the heart of the city, ‘Chaura Maidan’. Due to its strategic location, travellers can have a panoramic view of Choorchandani from the front. The original building of Hotel Peterhoff Shimla was in the Tudor style, hence after reconstruction, the original hill-station aesthetic was preserved while modifying it for modernized use.
